El Nino

Image above: The image shows what happens when a very strong El Nino strikes surface waters in the Central equatorial Pacific Ocean. The sequence shows warm water anomalies (red) develop in the Central Pacific Ocean. Winds that normally blow in a westerly direction weaken allowing the easterly winds to push the warm water up against the South American Coast. Credit: NASA

El Nino or El Nina is a phenomenon of the abnormal rise in temperature of surface ocean waters in the eastern tropical Pacific (Between South America and Indonesia). Also known as the Southern Oscillation the warm current is heated eastward (towards Indonesia), replacing the cold nutrient-rich surface water which supports a good fish habitat. As El Nino can last up to months, the fishing industry can be badly affected.

Current signs have proved that El Nino is on a strike back since its last occurrence in 2005. The following recent occurrences coincides with the signs of El Nino:

1. Rise in water surface pressure over Indian Ocean, Indonesia and Australia 2. Fall of air pressure over Central and Eastern Pacific Ocean 3. Trade winds in the south Pacific weakens and heads towards East (Indonesia) 4. Warm water spreads from west Pacific and Indian Ocean to the east Pacific, taking rain with it, causing drought in the western Pacific and rainfall in the normally dry eastern Pacofic.

This phenomenon can be seen to have a see-saw pattern. When the surface pressure is high in the eastern tropical Pacific, it is low in the tropical Pacific. And so happens in the vice-versa.

See below to further understand what El Nino is:

Normal Conditions

El Nino Conditions

Scientists do not really understand how El Nino forms. It is believed that El Nino may have contributed to the 1993 Mississippi and 1995 California floods, drought conditions in South America, Africa and Australia. It is also believed that El Nino contributed to the lack of serious storms such as hurricanes in the North Atlantic which spared states like Florida from serious storm related damage.1

In order to curb against El Nino, we urge all to conserve water usage in embrace for the drought and temperature to worsen. x

Nasi Campur @ Ole-Ole Bali

nasicampur Nasi Campur

Other than the Ayam Bertutu and the Kambing Bumbu dishes, Ole-ole Bali was also famous for its Nasi Campur (Mixed Rice). This is obviously a rice; in this case its white rice instead of briyanni. Catering to the meat-cravers, this dish comes with the choice of Beef Reandang or Chicken Rendang. The Nasi Campur is hence served with rice and meat with a combination of Grilled Squid, Grilled Dory fillet, Sambal spices, fried Belacan Kang Kong

The rice was just any other ordinary fragrant rice. However, our opted choice of Beef Rendang was good; tastefully rich and lean. Savoring the fresh grilled squid and Dory fillet too was very satisfying. The seafood were fresh, and grilled to perfection! What I loved most about this dish was the Satay Lipit. Its satay fish I presume, and every chew of it was memorable.

@ RM25.00++, I'd rate this dish a 5/5. Although having a comparable price to western restaurants such as TGIF or Itallianies, my vote's towards Ole-ole Bali because Ole-ole Bali serves fresh chef cooked food rather than pre-cooked and reheated food! Thumbs up to Ole-ole Bali! x

The NEVER-NEVER-Ending work

work

Work work work and work are my plural singular daily routine. Materials test on Saturday, electrical test coming up tomorrow, 2 quizzes up next week, tutorials for structures, Preliminary work for Electrical report, Computer lab submission on Friday, Structures Project 2… WHAT MORE! WHAT MORE!!! ARGH!!!!

Missing out on joy, social activities with friends, and time for myself is really consuming me! I need a breather. I feel like I’m going down down down!

Jumping to Conclusions? Not so Fast!

Below are 2 youtube videos of Britains Got Talent 2009. Watch them!

Realise that everyone is special in their own way! Never look down on anyone, as you too are not perfect. Be fair to others, and be fair to yourself! Take up the challenge, of accepting a person for his/her weaknesses, and soon you’ll come to discover his/her strength. God made us all special!

My 20th with the Thoo’s

Back on 11th April 2009, the Thoo’s - Kok Wai, Wendy and Suet Mei travelled all the way from Ampang to come by my place to celebrate my belated birthday (9th April) with me. Knowing that all my family members are scattered around the world, they wanted to help fit that hole in my heart with some warm family love.

Being greeted at my doorstep together with them were boxes of coffee bean cakes. This day was commemorated with a few slices of cakes which were picked up in midst of their travels. Above is a picture of my Birthday cake – Chocolate Fudge.

After the candle blowing, it was Bon Apatite! Above is a picture of the Blueberry Cheesecake which Suet Mei had.

Above is a picture of us all (Wendy, Kok Wai, Suet Mei and I). I really enjoyed the company and appreciated the effort to come by for my birthday. As seeing Wendy was a rare opportunity and Kok Wai an even rare-er opportunity, I really cherished our catching up that day. Till we meet again, I wish you good health and God speed.

Beyond Tears - An Easter Production by GTPJ

On Good Friday (10 April 2009), many people foregathered at Glad Tidings Petaling Jaya to be a part of this Easter commemoration, Beyond Tears Easter Drama. Each of our church members were encouraged to bring a friend or two along. In my case, Zhi Sheng, Sara and Sara’s mum allowed me the privilege to host them to this drama.

This drama is about the devastation, struggle and frustration which Kelly and Sam had to go through when their only child, Kevin’s  life unfolded before them. In the beginning of the drama, the sound effects plotted a horrific car accident scene, involving Kevin. The above picture describes the following act, which witnessed the fear that Kevin’s mum faced, fearing for her son’s life.

After many attempts of surgery and medication, Kevin’s proved to have come to an abrupt halt. He was diagnosed to have ceased of brain activity. As the doctors revealed this untoward finding to Kelly and Sam, both of them were shocked entirely.

Sam couldn’t bear the frustration, wondering why was God so cruel to allow their only son to have to encounter such a fate. His overwhelming sadness agonized himself completely and manifested into hatred towards God.

Kevin’s relatives also arrived, all being dumbfounded on what had happened to Kevin. They pleaded to the doctor, telling her that they will bear whatever the cost would be, wanting to ensure that Kevin’s life was to be preserved. They insisted that Kevin was a wonderful boy and should never be the person to have such a fate.

Staring into the helpless and monotonous face of her son, she yelled loudly in her heart asking him to awake. She was lost, not knowing whether continuing him on life support was a selfish act. Putting him down would mean putting herself to blame, as this decision would not involve Kevin, his own soul bearer.

The next act brought the audiences back into many many years ago of this very Friday. This was the day when Jesus was crucified on the cross. He too was helpless physically, but remained strong emotionally and spiritually. Did he deserve such a fate himself? Was it God’s fault that he had to come to face such despair in life?

During Jesus’s crucifixion, His mother, Mary bore the emotional pain which He bore physically. She too remained confuse and blamed herself for His untoward destiny. But what she did was to not be selfish, and went according to His desire to allow such a proceeding to happen.

After many contemplations, they finally decided that it was time to let Kevin go. As looking beyond tears, there would be joy and happiness. Soon, Kevin returned to the realms of God.

The next act leaped a 2 year time frame. It portrayed a thankful and happy lot, celebrating the recovery of their friend who was successful in a kidney transplant. The transplanted kidney once belonged to Kevin.

Sam and Kelly finally experienced the joy beyond tears, as the lost of Kevin provided a second chance to another person.

Bicycle Workshop @ Desa Parkcity

Sunday the 29th of March was the Resident’s Cycling Workshop organized by Desa Parkcity, and co-sponsored by imcyclist.com. Apparently, this marked the second Bicycle Workshop session ever held here. The workshop kicked start at 9.30am.

I only managed to arrive at the this workshop at 10.30am, immediately after my Sunday church service. Upon arrival, the dispersing early crowd deserted the arena. Only a few folks and couples were left at the workshop together with the staff. However, there was still an influx of participants, wanting to be involved in this NO licence, NO road tax fun! Above is a picture of one of the imcyclist.com staff.

Before entering the “circuit”, safety was to be ensured first! Seen above is a photo taken of Edwin (bicycle shop owner) gearing the cyclists up with necessary safety equipments. After that, they mounted the bikes and set off.

Ever wondered what a pinch of extreme sports would be like? This obstacle course was no easy job! No matter, this young one managed to complete it flawlessly after several attempts.

This 2 seater bicycle was made available to “experienced” cyclists. The requisites of being experience were just to sit back and listen to a 2 minute crash course on how to maneuver the bike!

It was very pleasing to see how this activity allowed family and friends get together and thicken their bonds. Above is a photo I find to be very memorable. It tends to reminisce our happy young times spent with our parents.

2009 Sem1 MOlympics @ Monash University (Sunway Campus)

On 25th February 2009 (Friday), Monash once again spiced up the mundane freshman’s orientation week with a whole lot of joy and fun via the MOlympics event. This Olympics sound-alike event provided an opportunity for the freshmen to mingle and get to know one another. Resembling the Olympics, MOlympics is also a competitive “fun-sports” events, where all participants will have to put their sportsmanship into play, in some real hilarious, silly and yet fun games! Above is a picture of the contestants, making their sportsmanship pledges prior to the launch of the event.

I was surprised by the amount of photographers present at this event. No matter, I was together with Christopher for the photo-shooting of this event. The new freshmen were each designated into a group colour, which signifies their respective faculty. Above is a picture of the red group, screaming “YEAH!”.

Prior to the commence of the MOlympics games, a little warm up and body stretching session was firstly held. That day, I noticed that in this semester, there were many more exchange students here at the Sunway Campus compared to the semesters before. Seen above is a picture of the business faculty students loosening their wrist joints!

The first game was the sponge race. The idea of the game is to keep the water absorbed in the sponge, clip it against your armpits and run to the pail to fill the water in. In midst of the starting point and the pail, the “sponge baton” has to be passed on to 3 other members. Above is a picture of my high school friend, Khai Hong who is new to Monash and is  present at this orientation event.

This is yet another shot taken during the sponge race. This match was contested between the engineering (orange) and the science (blue) faculties. I would say that this was my best shot of the day.

Next was the Frisbee game. I honestly have the faintest clue and idea how this game works and what are the winning criteria is.  All I know was that everyone had fun throwing and fetching the disk.

As the tuck of war games were in possession, cheering and claps were heard from afar. This was truly a team bonding game, as everyone held the rope and pulled it together in sequence.

Even when you fall, have faith that your team will be backing you up – That is what teamwork is! Above is a picture of the engineering faculty (yellow) during their match of tuck of war against the science faculty (red).

Lastly was the water war games. Everyone actually went berserk with their water guns, water balloons and water barrels. Splashes of water were followed by shrieky screams. This was the time which my camera had to get into hiding. Seen above is a picture of the girls, loading their guns with ammunitions.

After the games, the MOlympics event was over. Oh wait, this guy is still obsessive with his water gun. Time to go home guys!

Rakuzen Kitchen @ Waterfront, Desa Parkcity

Just a week ago, while my brother was still here in KL visiting, we played host to him for lunch at Rakuzen Kitchen at Waterfront of Desa Parkcity. The offerings here were abundant, and based on my standards, considered to be somewhat  pricy. Take for instance a single piece of Unagi Maki which would usually cost about RM2.50/pc at other chain sushi outlets (ie. Sushi King, Sakae Sushi), would cost RM5.00/pc  here at Rakuzen.

Probing into the pricing matter, I queried the restaurant manager and was told that the restaurant only imports meat produce of sushi fishes from reputable dealers of Taiwan and Japan. Unlike other chain sushi outlets here in Malaysia which bulk-buy these produce with very competitive prices from countries like China or Vietnam, the imported meats from Japan and Taiwan are bound to be much more fresh. I can’t say for sure whether I got psyched or not, but the sushi here did indeed taste very fresh, and the texture felt really good too. In fact, the wasabi served here at this restaurant is 100% natural, without any artificial flavorings. (I can be the best taster for proper wasabi as I am somehow allergic to artificial wasabi). Above is a picture of the Sashimi  (Sushi platter).

Above is a dish of the Maki Salmon and Maki Tuna, served with real tasty preserved gingers.

Also for appetizer, we ordered a dish of unsalted edamame (Green baby soy beans). I would believe that this was an overpriced dish, as I recall purchasing these beans for only RM5 for 500g of them. Unfortunately, this is how most sushi restaurants operate, in ripping off their customers.

Seen above is the Salt Grilled Saba Fish. This dish can be catered to a your personal preference of Salted Grilled or Sauteed Grilled. In my case, I requested it to be Salted Grilled, but requested them to stinge with the salt! This is a must try dish if you ever swing by Rakuzen. If you’re a fish fan (like me), you’ll ought to love it.

Above is a picture of the Cha Soba (buckwheat noodles) dish. Notice the black bowl with the pigeon egg on it? This dish is meant to be eaten by dumping all the spring onions, Japanese seaweed and the raw pigeon egg into the bowl which contains the soba dip; and then dunking the cold soba noodles into the dip.

Having the urge for some real good sushi? Check Rakuzen out!

PS: It would be probably 1.5 times the price of other chained sushi restaurants. But as they say, what you pay is what you get! Quality and serviceability is surely their style!
